How to Prevent Kitchen Fires

Kitchen Fire: one of most common domestic fires

How to Prevent Kitchen Fires

When we talk about fire breakouts at home,  Kitchen Fires are the most common. The reasons could be to faulty home appliances, improper wiring, unattended cooking and so on. Here are  few best ways in which one can prevent kitchen fires.

  • Check for faulty Home Appliances: Studies have shown that a large number of kitchen fires occur due to faulty home appliances. Register your new appliance with the company and sign-up for alerts from the company and watch-out for any recalls of the appliances you own.  If you move in to a home  with existing appliances (Eg: Service Apartment),  record  their make, model number and check the company website for recalls.

  • Upgrade old wiring: Get the wiring of your home checked. Many a times the electrical wiring in older homes are not sufficient to meet the demands of the modern appliances. Also, old wiring may have damaged wires or other problem which one might not be aware of. Also, regularly check the power cords for any damage from rodents like rats or overheating. This might cause shock circuit and at times electrical fires. Get it checked by a professional and upgrade the wiring if required.
Install a Fire Extinguisher in Kitchen

  • Install fire fighting equipment: Almost two-thirds of home fire deaths occur in homes that lack working smoke alarms. Each level of your home and every bedroom should have a smoke detector  to provide the fastest response to any type of fire. Keep one  fire extinguisher on every level, plus a smaller supplemental unit in the kitchen.

  • Avoid unattended cooking:  According to a report from American Red Cross, unattended cooking accounts to almost 90% of kitchen fires. Always stay in the kitchen while cooking. Turn off the stove even if you have to leave the kitchen for a short while during cooking. While baking, roasting or using the oven, use a  timer to remind you that it is on.

  • Keep the cooking are clear: Keep cooking area clear of things that can catch fire like paper, plastics, towels, curtains, food packaging etc. Also avoid wearing loose clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking. Use a fire resistant apron while cooking.
Ensure child safety in Kitchen

  • Make your kitchen child-safe: When you have small children at home it becomes mandatory to keep your kitchen risk-free. Keep kitchen counters and cooking area at a height of at least 3 feet or above to keep things out of your little one's reach. Unplug small appliances such as toasters, coffee makers, microwave, Etc. when not in use. Use back burner hobs instead of the  front ones for cooking.

  • Regularly clean the chimney and its vent: Over a period of time grease tends to accumulate on the chimney hoods and along its exhaust vent. You will be surprised to know that this grease is also one of the potential cause of fire hazard. Regular cleaning of the chimney hood and its exhaust  vent will take care of it.
